Here are two covers of Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter." The first is from Bob Seger's fifth studio album, Smokin' O.P.'s, recorded at Pampa's Studios in Detroit, Michigan. Bob played guitar on it while backed by the duo Teegarden & Van Winkle. You might remember their late 1970 Top 40 hit "God, Love And Rock & Roll." David Teegarden, an Okie residing in Tulsa, was on drums and Skip Knape (Van Winkle) was on organ and organ pedal bass. Jim Bruzzese was on tambourine. Bob also did a cover of Leon Russell's "Hummingbird" on that album. David Teegarden was the drummer on Seger's Against The Wind album which won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. David has a recording studio in Tulsa a few blocks from The Church Studio. Teegarden and Knape also recorded a few songs written by JJ Cale with the JJ Cale trio in 1966 as The Sunday Servants. Those are on this YouTube channel. Then there is Leon Russell's 1974 version of "If I Were A Carpenter," from his album Stop All That Jazz. It was recorded at Pete's Place in Nashville and engineered by studio owner Pete Drake, who also played steel guitar. During the session for it, "Wild Horses" and "Wabash Cannonball" Karl Himmel was on drums, Henry Best was on bass, Linda Hargrove, Edwin Scruggs, JJ Cale and Willie Nelson were guitarists. Cale played the lead electric guitar track. Willie and Leon sang a duet on "Wabash Cannonball," which like "Wild Horses" was not on the Stop All That Jazz album. Both appeared as bonus tracks on the 1990 DCC Compact Classics cd reissue of the album. Leon's cover of the Rolling Stones song "Wild Horses" was also the B-side of Leon's single of "If I Were A Carpenter," which was issued in a controversial picture sleeve that had Leon dressed in a robe standing behind a crucifixion cross. His adapted lyrics say, “If I was Jesus building crosses”. An alternate take of Leon and Willie's duet of "Wabash Cannonball" was used later on Leon's Hank Wilson's Back Volume 2 . On the cover of Leon’s album you see Tulsa’s Queen, Ann Bell, tied up next to Jamie Oldaker as Leon is in the kettle. The other woman tied up further to the right is Marcy Levy.
