Some Native American soldiers in the U.S. Army are allowed to keep their long hair and wear sacred eagle feathers while serving. Not as a fashion choice. As a religious accommodation. For some Native traditions, long hair carries deep spiritual and cultural meaning. Eagle feathers can also hold enormous significance, often connected to honor, prayer, sacrifice and identity. Army grooming rules normally require soldiers to follow strict standards. But soldiers with sincerely held religious beliefs can request exemptions. That can include permission to keep their hair uncut. And, in certain situations, to wear sacred feathers with their uniform. One well-known example is Maj. Patrick Sorensen, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The Army approved his request to grow his hair beyond normal regulations and wear eagle feathers during appropriate ceremonies.
