On this day in 1982, Asia’s self-titled LP debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #28 (April 3) It was the debut album of the 80s supergroup made up of keyboard player Geoffrey Downes and guitarist Steve Howe from Yes; King Crimson singer-bassist John Wetton, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer drummer Carl Palmer. "People said, 'No, that's not going to work. It's all keyboards now. It's all synthesizers’”, John Wetton recalled… “Actually, what we did was make a sound that blew synthesizers out of the water. Everyone said, 'Oh, no, no, no. A prog-guitar band ain't gonna work.' But it did." Steve Howe added, “… as soon as I stacked up the guitar and John started singing, we knew we had something special in ‘Heat of the Moment’.” The album went all the way to #1 in the US and Canada, #4 in Norway, #6 in Germany, #9 in France, #10 in the Netherlands, #11 in the UK, #13 in Australia, #15 in Japan, #17 in New Zealand, and #19 in Italy. It was the best-selling album of 1982 in the US. Asia's striking logo and cover artwork were created by Roger Dean, known for his work with Yes.
