It was released as a single, backed with Stephen Stills's "Find the Cost of Freedom", peaking at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Although a live version of the song was included on the group's 1971 double album Four Way Street, the studio versions of both songs did not appear on an LP until the group's compilation So Far was released in 1974. The song also appeared on the Neil Young compilation album Decade, released in 1977. The song also appears on Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall album, which he recorded in 1971 but did not release until 2007

Τόσος χρόνος χρειάστηκε από τη στιγμή που οι άνδρες της αμερικανικής Εθνοφρουράς άνοιξαν πυρ εναντίον αόπλων διαδηλωτών, οι οποίοι διαμαρτύρονταν για τη συνεχιζόμενη εμπλοκή των ΗΠΑ στον πόλεμο του Βιετνάμ, μέχρις ότου τέσσερις φοιτητές σωριαστούν νεκροί και άλλοι εννέα τραυματιστούν από τα πυρά – ο ένας θα έμενε παράλυτος για όλη του τη ζωή. Δεκατρία δευτερόλεπτα και εξήντα επτά σφαίρες… Το τραγικό περιστατικό συνέβη τη Δευτέρα 4 Μαΐου 1970 στο Κρατικό Πανεπιστήμιο του Κεντ της Πολιτείας του Οχάιο και έμεινε γνωστό στην ιστορία ως η Σφαγή του Κεντ ή η Σφαγή της 4ης Μαΐου. Η απροκάλυπτα δολοφονική βία των Εθνοφρουρών προκάλεσε μια αλυσιδωτή αντίδραση με αποτέλεσμα να ξεσπάσουν φοιτητικές απεργίες σε ολόκληρη την Αμερική, ενώ εκατοντάδες κολέγια και πανεπιστήμια έκλεισαν ή κατελήφθησαν από τους φοιτητές (“αυτούς τους αλητήριους που τινάζουν στον αέρα πανεπιστημιουπόλεις”, σύμφωνα με τον τότε Αμερικανό πρόεδρο Νίξον). AUGUST 1970 Joe Cocker released the live album Mad Dogs & Englishmen. The album's title is drawn from the 1931 Noël Coward song of the same name and Leon Russell's "Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen". Only four songs of the 16 on the original album were drawn from his first two studio albums. Besides the contributions of bandmate and musical director Leon Russell, it draws equally from rock (The Rolling Stones, Traffic, Bob Dylan, The Beatles) and soul (Ray Charles, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding). Accompanying Cocker is a choir, a three-piece horn section and several drummers. According to the liner notes, Cocker needed to put together a band quickly for a U.S. tour that his management had organized. He was informed only on 12 March 1970 about the tour which would start on 20 March. Russell recruited the musicians, many from his prior association with Delaney & Bonnie (Rita Coolidge, Carl Radle, Jim Price, Jim Horn, Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon). Chris Stainton was held over from Cocker's Grease Band and Cocker's producer Denny Cordell was part of the backing vocalists, as was Nicole Barclay of the band Fanny, and Claudia Lennear, the supposed subject of the Rolling Stones' hit, "Brown Sugar".
